Rewilding Argentina: How Wildlife Reintroductions are Saving Species
by Talía Zamboni December 9, 2020 | 11 AM - 12 PM Eastern Time -------- Zoom Link: https://msu.zoom.us/j/94610796573 Meeting ID: 946 1079 6573 Passcode: 713354 -------- Talía studied biology in the National University of Córdoba, Argentina and specialized in Wildlife management and conservation in Costa Rica and Oxford. She has been involved with the Iberá reintroduction projects by carrying out studies on different species such as pampas deer, giant anteaters and jaguar, a promotion campaign and since 2017 she is part of the species reintroduction team in Iberá, which she currently coordinates. Rewilding is a relatively new term associated to the idea of recovering an ecosystem’s structure and functionality through different techniques including the reintroduction of key species, especially top predators. In this talk, we will asses this concept by sharing the experience of Iberá Project in Northeast Argentina; a multispecies reintroduction project aiming to recover the large Iberá wetland ecosystem by creating a protected area and reintroducing several species that have been lost in the past due to human causes. Through restoring nature, local communities’ benefit through ecotourism activities, which are enhanced by the presence of a recovered and exuberant biodiversity. Thus, local people support the protected area and become proud of their natural resources. |
