Join Directors Rebecca Kormos and Kalyanee Mam to view their new short film, Cries of our Ancestors, followed by a Q & A session and time for connecting with other WiNN members.
The film focuses on the highlands of Guinea, where people and chimpanzees live peacefully side by side. Myths and stories — and a mutual respect for one another — have preserved this relationship for generations. Now, however, both people and chimpanzees are being pushed out of their homes by bauxite mining, which risks killing thousands of chimpanzees and displacing tens of thousands of people. Once sharing the same water source and fruits from the land, both now struggle to survive. Guinea has the largest population of chimpanzees in West Africa. Protecting their home in Guinea is one of their last chances of survival. It’s hard work standing up for a bird that most of the local villagers view as a pest, but Purnima and her Army have changed local attitudes and created a community of caring for the birds and for the people. Their inspiring story was recently published in Audubon magazine, which you can read here.
This WiNNsday event will feature a short presentation from Purnima on her work, an interactive Q&A session with Purnima and her Army, and time to chat with your WiNN sisters. This is fitting as our first event since the WiNN MSU group have been hosting their own “WiNNsdays” for a while.
As we all are adapting to changes in our lives due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, we invite you to share some uplifting messages and words of hope and encouragement for each other, as the MSU chapter shares fun tips and tricks they are using to live their lives in isolation and keep a positive attitude as well as creative event ideas for WiNN chapters. Join us for recipes, book reviews, connection, and maybe some virtual field herpetology from Michigan, USA! Here’s a good one to start your connection: Faith (Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande) WiNN member, Sharon Ryan and coaching colleagues at her women’s empowerment consultancy, Luneer Collective, are announcing Peer Pods for the Planet, a new 10-week online peer coaching/learning program for women in the conservation, environment and climate space. Their goal is to work with women at the new to mid-level stage of leadership, who are ready to step into their full potential as courageous leaders in these challenging times.
They are offering the first session at a special rate of $299 to provide support during these disruptive times and to invite feedback from the first cohort of participants. You can choose from one of two time slots: Tuesdays, April 14 to June 16 at either 12-1PM or 7-8 PM Eastern time (USA). It’s offered via weekly Zoom meetings of 60 minutes, with connection via a private online community as well as supportive resources. Discover the community of support you need right now! See more information at https://www.luneercollective.com/peer-pods/ and contact Sharon by April 3 at sryan@luneercollective.com if you are interested. |
